Cysts forming on the surface of an ovary are known as ovarian cysts. They are blister-like sacs filled with fluid. Sometimes it may contain blood and other semisolid or solid matters. The nature of a cyst depends on the cause and course of its formation. They are quite often painful but they do not result in serious problems in usual cases. A cyst can develop on either of the ovaries or on bilateral ovaries. Sometimes they occur as a symptom for other ovarian diseases like tumors or PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Tumors can also cause ovarian cysts. However, such a possibility in a healthy middle-aged woman is less than 10 percent. Nevertheless, it is advisory to confirm that the cyst is benign or fairly harmless.

The occurrence of ovarian cysts is fairly less common among postmenopausal women. The cysts are commonly seen among young and middle-aged women, especially after their pregnancy period. These cysts occur mainly due to imbalanced and undue hormonal changes in a woman. In a girl’s life, such an imbalance can occur during any stage but it is more common during teenage and after giving birth to a child. In general, these cysts prove troublesome for women who are in their late 20s. These are the times when the ovaries are more prone to cystic diseases. Obesity, painful menstruation and absence of regular menstruation are some of the signs of cystic ovaries.

Most of the times, women do not realize the activity of a cyst in their body. The cysts appear during ovulation periods. There are follicles in the ovary that are responsible for formation of egg or ovum. Lack of timely ovulation is one of the major causes of cyst formation. In 90 percent of the cases these cysts cause negligible symptoms and they disappear within a matter of months. And any associated symptom like abdominal cramps or excess menstrual flow is usually attributed to general menstruation troubles. However, recurrent cyst formation should be treated with appropriate medical care and measures should be taken to prevent its future occurrences. An endovaginal ultrasound is normally ordered by a gynecologist to detect the presence of a cyst. Through an ultrasound, the exact nature and size of the cyst can also be measured.

In the absence of noticeable symptoms these cysts can be let untreated. They are generally seen to be functional and relate to some of the most commonly seen ovulation disorders found in woman. However, ovarian cysts should be given special attention if it occurs during pregnancy. During pregnancy several drugs are contraindicated and care should be taken that the patient is not subject to any form of wrong treatment measures.

Causes of ovarian pain are wide-ranging. The exact cause of this pain can only be determined through proper medical examination or endovaginal ultrasound. Nevertheless, it is important to study the nature and frequency of the pain in order to have a proper timely diagnosis.

Usual pain that most women experience during their menstruation periods comes from their ovaries. Ovaries are responsible for ovulation and hence any kind of unlikely variation in this process can cause pain during this stage. Ovarian cyst is the most common factor that causes pain in more than 40 percent of the cases. These cysts are of different types depending on their causative factors. Women who take fertility medication are at a high risk of developing ovarian cysts. Such medicines lead to increased levels of female hormones that can result in painful cystic growths on the ovaries.

Moderate pain during menstruation can be due to the presence of a functional follicular cyst which is also known as Graafian follicle cyst. However, rupture of this kind of cysts can cause immense pain. Hemorrhagic cyst is a functional cyst that usually causes severe abdominal pain. This is a normal cyst but due to internal hemorrhage the cyst gets filled with blood and when it breaks it causes lower abdominal or pelvic pain. However, it is not necessary that a hemorrhagic cyst should break and cause bleeding. It can be resolved through proper pain medication and antibiotics. Most of the ovarian cysts can cause pain on exertion. They can cause pain during urination or whenever the pelvic organs experience some kind of pressure. Pain during intercourse is also a strong indication of presence of an ovarian cyst. Frequent cystic formation can be dangerous and can lead to more serious conditions or infections. Hence it is advisable that the patient responds to her pain symptoms as early as possible and gets appropriate remedial measures implemented.

In case of pregnancy, pain in the ovaries should be carefully monitored. It can be caused due to ectopic pregnancy occurring in one of the ovaries. The pain might not be severe in the beginning but still a diagnostic producer is highly indicated. Ovarian infections can also cause excessive ovarian pain. Infection can be due to various reasons and it is associated with symptoms that are not limited to pelvic pain. Infection in the uterus or fallopian tubes can spread to ovaries quite fast. It can lead to formation of painful abscess or a pus-filled cyst. It should be treated right from its onset with proper antibiotic regimen. In worsened cases, surgical removal of infected cysts or abscesses is done.

Tumors or cancerous growth in ovaries can also result in severe pain, persistently recurrent in nature.
