Cysts forming on the surface of an ovary are known as ovarian cysts. They are blister-like sacs filled with fluid. Sometimes it may contain blood and other semisolid or solid matters. The nature of a cyst depends on the cause and course of its formation. They are quite often painful but they do not result in serious problems in usual cases. A cyst can develop on either of the ovaries or on bilateral ovaries. Sometimes they occur as a symptom for other ovarian diseases like tumors or PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Tumors can also cause ovarian cysts. However, such a possibility in a healthy middle-aged woman is less than 10 percent. Nevertheless, it is advisory to confirm that the cyst is benign or fairly harmless.

The occurrence of ovarian cysts is fairly less common among postmenopausal women. The cysts are commonly seen among young and middle-aged women, especially after their pregnancy period. These cysts occur mainly due to imbalanced and undue hormonal changes in a woman. In a girl’s life, such an imbalance can occur during any stage but it is more common during teenage and after giving birth to a child. In general, these cysts prove troublesome for women who are in their late 20s. These are the times when the ovaries are more prone to cystic diseases. Obesity, painful menstruation and absence of regular menstruation are some of the signs of cystic ovaries.

Most of the times, women do not realize the activity of a cyst in their body. The cysts appear during ovulation periods. There are follicles in the ovary that are responsible for formation of egg or ovum. Lack of timely ovulation is one of the major causes of cyst formation. In 90 percent of the cases these cysts cause negligible symptoms and they disappear within a matter of months. And any associated symptom like abdominal cramps or excess menstrual flow is usually attributed to general menstruation troubles. However, recurrent cyst formation should be treated with appropriate medical care and measures should be taken to prevent its future occurrences. An endovaginal ultrasound is normally ordered by a gynecologist to detect the presence of a cyst. Through an ultrasound, the exact nature and size of the cyst can also be measured.

In the absence of noticeable symptoms these cysts can be let untreated. They are generally seen to be functional and relate to some of the most commonly seen ovulation disorders found in woman. However, ovarian cysts should be given special attention if it occurs during pregnancy. During pregnancy several drugs are contraindicated and care should be taken that the patient is not subject to any form of wrong treatment measures.

Ovarian cysts are a common problem seen among pre-menopausal women. In majority of the cases, these cysts are benign and their occurrence does not indicate any underlying disease or anomaly, but still evaluation of the nature and severity of symptoms exhibited by an ovarian cyst is essential before you come to any kind of conclusion.

There are different types of ovarian cysts and depending on their category they exhibit different symptoms. Functional cysts are most common and they are harmless. During menstruation days, 90 percent of the women belonging to all kinds of age group develop this kind of cysts. In almost 75 percent of the cases ovarian cysts are fairly asymptomatic. The rest may show variable symptoms depending on the age and etiology. The milder form of symptoms includes irregular menstrual cycles or considerable discomfort during menstruation. Apart from this, it causes pain that can be mild or somewhat severe. If the cysts are fairly large in size, it can lead to sharp pains. These pains are usually concentrated on the pelvic region where the ovaries are located. During menstruation cycles, the pain might even radiate to the back or the lumbar regions.

It can result in abdominal distention which is not a good sign. It also generally causes a pressure-like sensation or heaviness in the pelvic region. Sometimes these pain and heaviness can be activity related. Cyst formations are associated with ovulation and hence most of the symptoms are experienced during the menstruation days. The cysts might rupture during this period and can cause severe or prolonged pain. Pain during menstruation is a common symptom shared by a host of gynecological disorders and hence one cannot associate this symptom to cystic ovaries without any kind of diagnostic evidence. Occasional vaginal bleeding along with pain in this region is yet another symptom of ovarian cysts.

Pain in the lower abdominal regions during an intercourse or immediately after it generally indicates the presence of a cystic formation. In certain cases it can also lead to difficulty in conceiving and infertility.

Ovarian cysts can induce vomiting or nausea, especially during menstruation cycles. Presence of excessive breast tenderness and increased vaginal discharge are some of the other associated problems. It can also cause excessive fat accumulation around the abdominal or waist regions. Sometimes it is accompanied with excessive hair growth, fatigue, headache, and chest pains.

If the abovementioned symptoms occur persistently, it is mandatory to consult your family physician or gynecologist. Mostly, they require only symptomatic medications and antibiotics. Only in rare cases, a cyst removal is ordered which is carried out surgically. Special care should be taken in case of pregnancies.
