One day you were cooking the favorite dish of your family. As you prepare the vegetables and ingredients, you felt a painful jab in your pelvic area. You ignored the pain, dismissing it as the usual pain you have been feeling for a month now. After dinner another pain, this time more intense than the other, has been pulling on your reproductive organ area. Then you remembered what your friend Donna was discussing with you the other day – pain within the reproductive organs could be synonymous to cysts. Because of this fact, you immediately contacted your doctor and told him your symptoms.

This is one of the more common stories about ovarian cysts symptoms. More and more women experiencing the nagging pain in their pelvis report to the doctor to consult – and sometimes remove the fear they have of having ovarian cysts. Because of being misinformed a lot of women think that having ovarian cysts is already synonymous to having ovarian cancer, but this is not so. Most ovarian cysts are benign, meaning non cancerous. These cysts form and then disappear after several weeks. But the malignant ovarian cysts are the ones that cause cancer. If left untreated these malignant ovarian cysts could be the cause of your death. But before we discuss the more morbid sickness known to us as ovarian cancer, we need first to be well-informed as to the symptoms of ovarian cysts.

Ovarian cyst is a pouch of fluid that accumulates inside the solid ovaries. Ovarian cysts are usually associated with the following symptoms: abdominal pain (which is the most frequent symptom in all types of cysts in the reproductive system), a change in the menstrual cycle ranging from bleeding in between menstrual periods to having irregular periods, infertility, heavy menstrual flow, intense menstrual cramps, pain during sexual intercourse, painful toilet times, and even weight gain.

There are also cases wherein the cysts get twisted and this becomes the main source of severe pain to women. This twisting may cause severe periods of pain, due to a cyst that burst and released the fluid to the abdominal cavity. Since this period of pain is almost synonymous to having an infection, leading to abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and shock symptoms (shock symptoms like having cold and clammy skin, rapid breathing and others), its is wise that a woman seek the immediate help of a doctor.

Since ovarian cysts symptoms are already the indications to having either benign or malignant cysts, women are enjoined to immediately seek the assistance of their gynecologists to enlighten them about the condition of their ovaries. Vaginal sonograms produce images of the cysts inside the ovaries and are helpful in the detection of the size and concentration of the fluid within the cyst. Pap smears also help doctors by providing them samples of your vaginal discharge which could later be examined and tested for the presence of ovarian cysts. From the laboratory results of these examinations, doctors could then provide you the comfort and treatment you need to undergo to make these ovarian cysts go away.

Still, women should be reminded to be vigilant in monitoring the above-mentioned ovarian cysts symptoms. Once you experience any of these symptoms, it will always be wise to consult your doctor about your concern – at least by doing so you could be assured that help is just a phone call away when it comes to diagnosing and treating ovarian cysts.
